Let me share another interesting tidbit. Have you noticed the famous bronze doors known as The Gates of Paradise on the Baptistery in front of the cathedral? In 1401, years before the Dome was created, a citywide competition took place among the artists. Each contestant received the same materials and amount of bronze to create a door. The gates of Paradise is the result of that competition, and the winner was Lorenzo Ghiberti. The main architect of the Dome was also the second finalist of the competition, and since then they were each other’s greatest rival!
